This guide translates the most common codes into plain words. You will get checks to try for each one, plus honest advice on when to call a tech.
Quick note: Whirlpool owns Maytag. The two brands share platforms and parts. Many error codes work the same on both. If you know Whirlpool codes, you already know most Maytag codes.
Maytag Washer Error Codes: Quick Reference Table
Keep this list handy. These are the codes you will see most often on Maytag top load and front load models.
| Code | Meaning | First thing to check |
|---|---|---|
| Sd / SUD | Too many suds | Detergent amount and type |
| OL | Overload or unbalanced | Redistribute the load |
| LF / F8E1 | Long fill | Water valves and inlet screens |
| LD / F9E1 | Long drain | Drain hose kinks and pump filter |
| dL | Door lock fault | Lid lock assembly |
| Lid lock flashing | Lid not locked | Push lid shut, check for trapped clothes |
Sd or SUD: Too Many Suds
Sd is the most common code and the easiest fix. It means the washer senses too much foam. The machine pauses and adds an extra rinse to clear it. The cycle takes longer than normal.
First, use less detergent. High efficiency washers need only one or two tablespoons of HE detergent per load. Regular detergent makes far more foam and will trigger Sd every time. Switch to HE detergent if you have not already.
If Sd shows on every load even with the right detergent, soap residue has built up inside the drum. Run one empty cycle on hot with two cups of white vinegar. Do not add clothes or detergent. This flushes the residue out. Our washer repair hub has a full soap buildup section if the problem keeps coming back.
OL: Overload or Unbalanced Load
OL means the drum is off balance or the load is too heavy. The washer refuses to spin because a wild spin could damage the machine. You may hear thumping before the code shows.
Open the lid and spread the clothes evenly around the drum. Pull heavy items apart so they are not clumped on one side. If the load is huge, take a few items out. Blankets, rugs, and comforters cause OL often because they soak up water and get heavy on one side.
Wash bulky items one at a time. Pair them with a few small items to balance the drum. This simple habit prevents most OL codes.
LF or F8E1: Long Fill
LF means long fill. The washer waited too long for water and gave up. On some models this shows as F8E1 instead. Same problem.
Check both water valves behind the washer. Make sure they are fully open. Turn them all the way counterclockwise. Next, turn the valves off and unscrew the fill hoses from the washer. Look at the small mesh screens inside the inlet ports. Sand and grit clog these screens and slow the water to a trickle. Rinse the screens clean and reconnect the hoses.
Also check the hoses for kinks. A hose folded behind the washer chokes the flow. Low water pressure in your home can cause LF on its own, especially if it happens on every load.
LD or F9E1: Long Drain
LD means long drain. The washer could not pump the water out in time. F9E1 is the same fault on models that use F codes.
Start with the drain hose. Pull the washer out and check the hose for kinks or crushing. The hose should loop up to the standpipe without sharp bends. If the hose runs into a standpipe, make sure it is not pushed in more than a few inches. A hose shoved too deep creates a seal that blocks drainage.
Next, check the drain pump filter if your model has one. Front load Maytags hide it behind a small door at the bottom front. Put a towel down, open the door, and twist the filter cap out. Coins, socks, and lint collect here and block the pump. Clean it out and the drain time often returns to normal.
For help telling a hose clog from a washer fault, see our guide on a washing machine drain clogged. If the washer will not drain or spin at all, see our washer won’t drain or spin guide. It walks through the full diagnosis step by step.
Lid Lock Light Flashing
Maytag washers lock the lid before the spin cycle. If the lid lock light flashes, the lock did not engage. The washer will not start or will stop mid cycle.
Push the lid down firmly and listen for the lock to click. Look for a sock or shirt trapped between the lid and the drum. Even a small item can keep the lid from seating.
If the lid is shut and the light still flashes, the lid lock switch has likely failed. This is a common wear part. A tech can replace it quickly. Until then, do not force the lid open mid cycle. Wait for the lock light to go out.
Other Codes Worth Knowing
dL means the door or lid lock circuit has a fault. This is different from the flashing light. It points to the lock assembly itself or its wiring.
Po or Po10 can show after a power outage. The washer is telling you power was lost mid cycle. Press Cancel to clear it and restart the cycle.
HC or hC means hot and cold hoses are reversed. Swap the hoses at the wall valves. The washer needs the right temperature from the right valve.
For Samsung machines, the code system is totally different. See our Samsung error codes guide if you own both brands.
When a Reset Helps
Many codes clear after you fix the cause and press Cancel. For a stubborn code, unplug the washer for five minutes. This resets the control board. Plug it back in and run a short cycle. If the code returns right away, the fault is real. Do not keep resetting. A returning code means a part needs repair.
When to Call a Tech
Call a tech if a code returns after you tried the checks above. Also call if you see burning smells, sparking, or water leaking from the bottom of the machine. Electrical faults and pump failures are not DIY jobs for most people.
A good rule: if the fix needs the back panel removed or involves wiring, let a pro handle it. The diagnostic visit usually costs less than a wrong guess on parts.

Frequently Asked Questions
What does Sd mean on a Maytag washer?
Sd means too many suds. The washer senses extra foam and adds a rinse to clear it. Use less detergent next time, and switch to HE detergent if you have not already. If Sd shows on every load, run one empty hot cycle with a cup of white vinegar to flush soap residue from the drum.
Why does my Maytag washer show OL?
OL means the load is too heavy or unbalanced. The washer cannot spin safely with the drum off balance. Open the lid, redistribute the clothes evenly, and remove a few heavy items if the load is huge. Blankets and rugs often trigger OL because they soak up water and clump on one side.
What does LF mean on a Maytag washer?
LF stands for long fill. The washer waited too long for water to reach the needed level. Check that both water valves behind the washer are fully open. Clean the small mesh screens where the fill hoses meet the washer. Low house water pressure can also cause LF on its own.
How do I clear a Maytag washer error code?
Fix the cause first, then press Pause or Cancel to clear the code. Many codes clear on their own after a completed cycle. For a stubborn code, unplug the washer for five minutes to reset the control board. If the code returns right away, the fault is real and needs a repair.
Why is the lid lock light flashing on my Maytag washer?
A flashing lid lock means the lid did not lock properly. Push the lid down firmly and listen for the lock to click. Check for clothes trapped between the lid and the drum. If the light keeps flashing with the lid shut, the lid lock switch itself may have failed and needs replacing.
Are Maytag and Whirlpool washers the same inside?
Mostly yes. Whirlpool owns Maytag, and they share platforms, parts, and error code systems. Many codes work the same on both brands. That is why a fix for a Whirlpool F9E1 drain code often works for a Maytag LD code too. Parts like drain pumps and lid locks are often interchangeable.
