GE makes both electric and gas ovens. They fail in different ways. Electric models usually lose a heating element. Gas models usually lose an igniter. Find your type below and work through the checks in order.
GE Oven Repair: Heating Problems on Electric Models
Unplug the guesswork first. Turn the oven to bake at 350 degrees. Wait five minutes. Open the door and look at the bake element, the metal bar along the oven floor.
A good element glows dull red all the way across. A bad one stays dark, or glows only in spots. Look closely for blisters, cracks, or holes in the metal. Any of these means the element is burned out.
The broil element lives on the oven ceiling. Test it the same way using the broil setting. Broil elements fail less often, but they do fail.
Before you blame the element, check your breaker. Electric ovens need 240 volts from a double breaker. If one half trips, the oven may light up but never heat. Flip the breaker fully off, then back on.
If the elements look fine and power is good, the temperature sensor may be bad. It is a thin metal rod inside the oven, usually in a back corner. A failed sensor tells the control board the wrong temperature. The board then heats too much or too little. Sensors are cheap parts. Testing one takes a multimeter and five minutes. Our oven repair hub explains how sensors fail and what replacement involves.
GE Gas Oven Will Not Light
Gas GE ovens use a glow igniter. It heats up until it is hot enough to open the gas valve. This part weakens slowly over years.
Watch the igniter through the oven floor vent when you start bake. A healthy igniter glows bright orange within a minute. A weak one glows dull red, or takes several minutes. A weak igniter will not open the gas valve, so you get no flame and no heat.
This is the single most common gas oven failure. The fix is a new igniter matched to your model number. For a deeper walkthrough, see our guide on the gas oven igniter that glows but will not light.
If the igniter glows bright and you still get no flame, the gas valve or control board may be bad. Check that the gas shutoff behind the oven is fully open. Do not take gas valves apart yourself. Call a technician for anything past the igniter.
GE Oven Temperature Is Off
Food burns on top but stays raw inside? Or everything takes twenty minutes longer than the recipe says? Your oven temperature is probably off.
Buy a cheap oven thermometer and hang it from the middle rack. Preheat to 350 degrees. Wait twenty minutes after the preheat beep. Read the thermometer.
A difference under 25 degrees is normal. Most ovens swing a little. A bigger gap points to a failing temperature sensor or a tired control board.
Many GE models let you calibrate. You can shift the displayed temperature up or down by up to 35 degrees in the settings menu. Your manual shows the button sequence. Calibration fixes drift, but it cannot fix a dead sensor. If the thermometer reading jumps around wildly, the sensor is failing.
GE Self-Clean Door Lock Stuck
Self-clean runs the oven near 900 degrees. The door locks shut for safety. It should unlock once the oven cools below about 200 degrees, usually one to three hours later.
If the door stays locked, wait longer. Forcing it can break the lock motor or bend the door frame. Patience fixes most stuck locks.
Still locked after three hours? Turn off the breaker for one full minute. This resets the lock motor on many models. If it stays locked, the lock motor assembly or its switch has failed. A technician can release it without damage.
One warning: never run self-clean right before a holiday dinner. If the lock or a part fails during the cycle, you have no oven until it is fixed. Our oven not heating guide covers what to check when an oven dies at the worst moment.
GE Oven Error Codes
GE ovens show F codes when something is wrong. The most common ones:
- F0 or F1: Control board failure. Try a breaker reset. If it returns, the board needs replacement.
- F2 or F3: Overheating or sensor fault. Let the oven cool. Check the temperature sensor. Do not keep using an overheating oven.
- F7: Stuck keypad button. Press each button firmly. If the code stays, the touchpad is bad.
- F9: Door lock problem, usually after self-clean. See the lock section above.
Write down the exact code before you reset anything. The code tells the technician where to start. That saves you diagnostic time and money. Take a phone photo of the display too. Codes can vanish after a reset, and the photo preserves the evidence.
When to Call a GE Oven Technician
Call a pro when you smell gas, see sparking, or find burned wiring. Call when the breaker trips repeatedly. Call when the control board shows F0 or F1 and a reset does not clear it. Call when the oven overheats and shows F2 more than once.
Simple element and igniter swaps are fair DIY jobs. Anything involving gas valves, control boards, or sealed wiring is not. A wrong move with 240 volts or a gas line is dangerous. Your safety is worth more than the service fee.

Frequently Asked Questions
Why won't my GE oven heat up?
The most common cause is a burned out bake element on electric models. Look for blisters, holes, or dark spots on the element. On gas models, a weak igniter is the usual culprit. It may glow but not get hot enough to open the gas valve. Check the breaker first. Then inspect the element or igniter before calling for service.
How do I reset my GE oven?
Turn off the breaker that feeds the oven for one full minute. Then turn it back on. This clears most electronic glitches and some error codes. If the code comes right back, the oven has a real fault. A reset will not fix a burned out element or a dead sensor. Note the code so you can tell the technician.
Why is my GE oven temperature wrong?
Oven thermometers drift over time. Place an oven thermometer inside and preheat to 350 degrees. If it reads more than 25 degrees off, the temperature sensor or control board is likely bad. Many GE models let you calibrate the temperature plus or minus 35 degrees in the settings menu. Check your manual for the exact steps.
Why is my GE oven door locked after self-clean?
The door stays locked until the oven cools below about 200 degrees. This can take one to three hours. Do not force it. If it stays locked after cooling, the door lock motor or switch has failed. Try a breaker reset for one minute. If the lock still will not release, you need a technician to open it safely.
What does F2 mean on a GE oven?
F2 usually means the oven got too hot. The temperature sensor or control board is the likely cause. Let the oven cool completely, then reset the breaker. If F2 returns on the next use, stop using the oven and call for service. Running an overheating oven is unsafe. Do not ignore this code.
Can I replace a GE oven bake element myself?
Yes, on most electric models it is a simple job. Turn off the breaker first. Remove the two screws holding the element, pull it forward, and unplug the wires. Reverse the steps with the new part. If wires are burned or the plug is damaged, stop and call a technician. Always match the exact GE part number.
