Everyone wants to buy once and never think about it again. The answer to what brand of appliances lasts the longest is not one brand. It depends on the appliance. This guide ranks brands by real world reliability. It explains how the ranking works and shows you which models to favor and which to skip.

What brand of appliances lasts the longest: the short answer

Speed Queen makes the longest lasting washers and dryers. Miele and Bosch make the longest lasting dishwashers. Whirlpool makes the most reliable mainstream refrigerators, and Sub Zero makes the longest lasting fridges of any kind. GE and Maytag sit a solid tier below the leaders. Samsung and LG refrigerators have the highest service rates among major brands.

The pattern behind every ranking: simpler machines last longer. Fewer circuit boards, fewer sensors, and no ice maker means fewer things to break.

How this ranking works

This is not one person’s opinion. It combines three sources of real world data.

Yale Appliance reliability reports. Yale Appliance is a large Boston area retailer that also runs its own service department. Each year it publishes reliability rankings based on tens of thousands of its own service calls. It reports which brands needed service in the first year and which did not. This is the closest thing the industry has to hard failure data.

Consumer Reports surveys. Consumer Reports surveys hundreds of thousands of its members about appliance breakdowns. Its brand reliability rankings reflect predicted reliability from real owner experiences across many years and regions.

Repair technician patterns. Working techs see the same failures repeat across brands and model years. When independent shops agree on a pattern, it is real. Samsung ice maker freeze ups and LG linear compressor failures are two examples.

Two honest caveats. First, exact figures move year to year as models change. So this ranking uses qualitative tiers instead of pretending one number is permanent. Second, reliability varies more between product lines than between brand names. A brand can make an excellent dishwasher and a poor refrigerator at the same time.

Tier 1: the longest lasting brands

Speed Queen: washers and dryers

Speed Queen builds commercial grade laundry machines for homes. Metal transmissions, simple controls, and minimal electronics. Repair techs consistently name it the most reliable washer brand, and many say it is what they own themselves. Warranties run up to 7 years, far longer than the industry standard one year. The tradeoff is fewer features and smaller capacities than competitors.

Miele: dishwashers

Miele dishwashers are tested for the equivalent of 20 years of use. They post the lowest dishwasher service rates in published repair data. Nearly every part is made in house, and parts stay available for 15 years or more. The tradeoff is price. Miele costs two to three times a mainstream dishwasher.

Bosch: dishwashers

Bosch dishwashers rank just behind Miele for reliability at a much lower price. The mid range and upper series use stainless tubs and simple, proven designs. Avoid the cheapest base series, which uses more plastic parts. Bosch is the best reliability value in dishwashers.

Sub Zero: refrigerators

Sub Zero builds dual compressor refrigerators designed to last 20 years or more. Two separate cooling systems mean the freezer and fridge never share air, which keeps food fresher and reduces strain. The company stocks parts for decades. The tradeoff is price: several times a mainstream fridge.

Whirlpool: mainstream refrigerators and washers

Whirlpool top freezer refrigerators are the reliability champions of the mainstream market. Simple design, proven compressors, and parts that any tech can get cheaply. Whirlpool top load washers share the same reputation. When repair techs recommend a fridge for someone on a budget, this is usually the answer. Own a Whirlpool washer? Our Whirlpool washer page covers its most common failure.

Tier 2: solid and dependable

These brands will not top the charts, but they earn their place with fair prices and good parts support.

GE Appliances. GE sits in the upper middle for most categories. Its laundry and cooking appliances have decent service records. GE dryers are widely serviced and parts are easy to find. Our GE dryer page covers its common failures.

Maytag. Owned by Whirlpool, Maytag shares platforms and parts with Whirlpool machines. Reliability is close to Whirlpool with slightly more aggressive styling and marketing. Parts are cheap and every tech knows these machines.

Frigidaire. Frigidaire, owned by Electrolux, makes affordable refrigerators with acceptable reliability. Parts are inexpensive and widely available. It will not outlast a Whirlpool, but it costs less up front. Our Frigidaire refrigerator page covers its weak points.

KitchenAid. KitchenAid dishwashers and ranges have loyal followings but middling reliability scores. Repair costs run higher than average. Buy for the design and features, not for longevity.

Which refrigerator brand is most reliable

Fridges deserve their own ranking because the spread between best and worst is the widest of any appliance.

Most reliable: Whirlpool top freezer models. Simple, proven, cheap to fix. Bosch counter depth models also rank well in published service data.

Reliable premium pick: Sub Zero. Nothing else is built to the same standard, and the price reflects it.

Highest service rates: Samsung and LG French door models. This is not close. Samsung’s in door ice makers freeze into solid blocks of ice on models from about 2015 to 2022. The problem often recurs even after repairs. LG’s linear compressors failed at high rates on 2014 to 2017 models, leading to a class action settlement in 2020. Both brands cool well when they work. They just need service more often.

The ice maker rule. Across every brand, the ice maker drives a large share of refrigerator service calls. Repair techs consistently report it as the number one fridge failure. If longevity is your priority, buy a fridge without an in door ice maker. Or accept that the ice maker is the part most likely to need service.

Own one of these? Own one of these? Here is its most common failure. Samsung refrigerators: ice maker freeze ups. LG refrigerators: linear compressor and fan failures. Frigidaire refrigerators: ice maker and control issues.

The patterns that shorten any appliance’s life

Brand matters less than these four choices.

Ice makers. The single biggest reliability killer in refrigerators. Every brand’s in door ice maker fails more than any other fridge part.

Smart features. WiFi boards, touchscreens, and cameras add failure points. Smart fridges fail more often than basic models in every dataset. If you want a screen, put a tablet on the fridge instead.

Cheap base models. The lowest priced series from good brands often uses thinner materials and cheaper parts than the mid range. Bosch’s base dishwasher series is the classic example. Step up one series for a real durability gain.

Discontinued parts. Some brands stop making parts for older models quickly. Samsung and LG are the most cited for this. A reliable machine you cannot get parts for is not reliable for long. Before buying, check that the brand sells parts directly to independent shops.

How to buy for longevity

  1. Choose fewer features over more. Every added function is an added failure point.
  2. Check the warranty. Longer parts and labor coverage signals manufacturer confidence.
  3. Look up the model on repair forums before buying. Search the model number plus “problems.”
  4. Buy from a brand with US parts distribution. Weeks long part waits turn small repairs into replacements.
  5. Clean the condenser coils twice a year. This free habit adds years to any fridge.
  6. For laundry, consider Speed Queen if the budget allows. The math favors it over two cheap machines.

Frequently asked questions

What brand of appliances lasts the longest?

Speed Queen washers and dryers, Miele dishwashers, and Bosch dishwashers consistently post the lowest service rates in published repair data. For fridges, Whirlpool top freezer models and Sub Zero built ins last the longest. Fewer features and simpler designs last longer across every brand.

Which refrigerator brand is most reliable?

Whirlpool top freezer refrigerators are among the most reliable fridges you can buy, with simple designs and cheap, available parts. Bosch counter depth models also rank well. Samsung and LG French door models have the highest fridge service rates, driven by ice maker failures and, for LG, linear compressor problems on 2014 to 2017 models.

Are expensive appliances more reliable?

Not always. Price buys features more than durability. A $1,200 Speed Queen washer outlasts many $2,000 smart washers because it has fewer electronic parts to fail. The exception is premium build quality: Miele and Sub Zero cost more and genuinely last longer, backed by longer warranties and longer parts availability.

How long should appliances last?

Typical lifespans: refrigerators 10 to 20 years, washers 10 to 13 years, dryers 10 to 13 years, dishwashers 9 to 13 years, ovens and ranges 15 to 20 years. Simpler models reach the top of these ranges. Feature heavy models with ice makers and smart screens tend toward the bottom.

Do Samsung appliances last?

It depends on the appliance. Samsung washers and dryers have decent reliability records. Samsung refrigerators have the highest service rates among major brands, driven almost entirely by French door ice maker failures. If you buy a Samsung fridge, consider skipping the in door ice maker or budget for future ice maker repairs.
